Welcome to Susan Mackenzie Artworks

I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. I attended Cambridge Art School in the sixties, where I had my first experience of painting in oils. Since then, I have experimented with many other media, but it is to watercolour I always return. I love the lambent beauty of watercolour paint and, even after twenty five years of working almost exclusively in the medium, I relish the continuing challenges it poses. My subjects include landscapes, seascapes, flowers, portraits of people, pets and animals, wildlife, still lives - in fact, more or less everything suitable to my realistic style. I have carried out many commissions, given watercolour demonstrations to art groups and, in recent years, I have been running small, private watercolour painting courses. As I tell my students, watercolours are not for those who wish to control or dominate their medium. If you try to force them, your work will have none of the wonderful spontaneity the medium offers but, if only you will let them, watercolour paints will themselves show you the way......a lesson I still sometimes struggle with myself, and which I expect to go on trying to learn as long as I can hold a brush......
